Year in and year out we come across Patient Leaders who continue to change the health world. These Patient leaders are true stars who continue to shine and don’t fit into just one category. Basically, they’ve done it ALL!
During the WEGO Health Awards, we like to recognize these Patient Leaders with the Lifetime Achievement award. Last year, we celebrated Patient Leader Barby Ingle as the Lifetime Achievement award winner.
Internationally known Neuroendocrine Cancer Patient Leader, Ronny Allan, is certainly making his mark in the online health community.
Diagnosed with incurable Metastatic Neuroendocrine Cancer in July 2010, Ronny decided to share his experiences with this unusual, complex disease through blogging. This hobby quickly became a passion as Ronny became determined to move Neuroendocrine Cancer into mainstream knowledge circles. His blog offers factual and educational resources with the occasional pinch of humor in hopes of putting a positive spin on life.
As his blog continued to grow, so did his community. As winner of the 2016 WEGO Health Awards, Best in Show Community, Ronny has fostered a community where patients and caregivers have come to rely on his support, educational resources, and balanced perspective.
#WEGOHealthAwards Winners Series Podcast, Shane Schulz, had the opportunity to sit down with Ronny and discuss how his patient leadership began and how he went on to build the strong community we see today. Be sure to listen to the full interview on Spreaker and iTunes.
Aaron Blocker was the 2016 WEGO Health Award Winner for Best in Show: Facebook and it’s no surprise why.
“When I was diagnosed, I had never heard of Crohn’s or met anyone with the disease. Because of that, I started an online Facebook page to meet others. Six years later my community has grown tremendously and so has my passion for helping patients, educating people about IBD, and spreading awareness. I strive to make a difference where I can,” he shares.
Somehow in all the midst of his tremendous advocacy work for the Crohn’s community, he’s also making the time to earn his Ph.D. in immunology in hopes of pursuing IBD research to help fellow patients and caregivers.
“My passion for science stems from my passion for helping IBD patients, and through research, I intend to do just that. I enjoy writing blog posts about IBD and also writing about IBD science, and breaking the research down for patients to understand.”
It’s clear this is one patient leader not to be missed. Be sure to listen to the exclusive WEGO Health Award Winners Series to hear more about Aaron and his plans for the IBD community! You can listen to the full interview on Spreaker and iTunes.
