We have the opportunity to work with countless Patient Leaders who amaze us more and more every day. These Leaders are online advocating for others and helping transform healthcare for the better.
Who are some of these Leaders? Where can you find them? In this #FollowFriday series we’ll highlight top members of our Patient Leader Network and give you links to their social channels.
Fibromyalgia Patient Leader
“I advocate on behalf of the Fibromyalgia community because I see a need to better support my community and our families. I see a solution to bring multidisciplinary Centers of Excellence for and from the fibromyalgia community. And, I see a future where we will no longer feel the need to hide behind a wall of shame due to the false perceptions and stigmas that currently exist in the fibromyalgia community.”
Breast Cancer Patient Leader
“Eight years ago I was reminded by a playful posting on Facebook to perform a breast self-exam. I did and discovered a lump that turned out to be breast cancer. I was very fortunate in finding my cancer in the early stages and was able to save my breasts and, more importantly, my life. I endured nine months of treatment and during that time my family was showered with acts of kindness from our community. I was so grateful that I decided to do something to give back to my community. I started the non-profit foundation “Don’t be a Chump! Check for a Lump!” Our mission is to make a difference in the fight against breast cancer through education, prevention and direct assistance with a free wig, mammograms, and treatment. Being a survivor myself fuels my passion to carry on our mission. We can truly save lives through early detection. We can empower women with knowledge to prevent a large portion of breast cancer. We can help women in need with free wigs, free mammograms, and life-saving treatment. It is through our community’s generous support that I am able to do the work that I do.”
Gustavo San Martin
Multiple Sclerosis Patient Leader
“I have been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in 2011. The day I heard about the disease, my mother start researching about MS on Internet. The references she found were not positive! A few minutes later she came into my room, sobbing from crying, and asked: Son, are you going to die? From that day on I decided to work so that any other people would not come across the scenario that my mother found. Today, 04 years later, AME (the page I created to inform) is the largest association/platform of people with MS in Brazil.”
