Some people would say all superheroes can fly, however, here at WEGO Health- we don’t believe the cape says it all. Day in and day out, we see thousands of incredible patient leaders- striving for change, pushing the limits and stepping into the action to change healthcare for the better. The #WEGOHealthAwards Winners Series podcast had the chance to sit down with the 2016 Patient Leader Hero Award winner, Jessica Gimeno, to learn just what super powers keep her going!
She may not be an actual superhero, but Jessica is certainly a warrior. She fights five illnesses daily: bipolar II, polycystic ovarian syndrome, asthma, psoriasis, and the neuromuscular autoimmune disease Myasthenia Gravis (MG). Her blog, Fashionably ill: The Sick Woman’s Stylist helps people survive chronic illness with a touch of style and humor. Inspired by her own health challenges, Jessica is on a mission to helps sick women feel confident despite changes in their appearance.
In addition to her blog, Jessica writes for The Huffington Post and Ask a Bipolar and has spoken at conventions for organizations like the National Alliance on Mental Illness and eXl Pharma. She won 2nd Prize in the National Council of Community Behavioral Healthcare’s Awards of Excellence. In her two years at The Balanced Mind Foundation, she wrote/hosted the mental health blog & podcast Flipswitch.
She doesn’t stop there.
Her article, “Three Words Everyone with Mental Illness Should Know,” was published on the White House’s mental health website. She was also selected to be part of the White House’s “Stories of Hope and Recovery” mental health campaign; which included some top influencers like Glenn Close and Demi Lovato. Jessica has also presented a TEDx talk at the National Museum of Mexican Art called, “How to Get Stuff Done When You’re Depressed.”
The strength, determination, and perseverance it takes to complete all these impactful achievements is certainly nothing short of a superhero! Sure she may not fly around with a cape, but changing healthcare is quite the task and clearly, Jessica is right in the action.
