This was a favorite of our Health Activist Writer’s Month Challenge so I’m excited to make it part of NHBPM, too.
Today’s prompt is to do an Ekphrasis blog post. “Ekphrasis” is writing about another art form. Like when people write songs about paintings or write a poem based on a dance. This particular prompt is great when you don’t even know where to begin blogging but know you want to (or need to) write something. It gets the creativity flowing by distracting you into enjoying someone else’s art. Not a bad thing to distract yourself with.
You can use a painting, photo, or other form of art that you already know and love – but why not try something new and inspiring? Head over to Flickr Creative Commons (or Google images or Art.com) and type in a random word (or phrase like “oil painting” or “realistic still life” or whatever you think of).
See what images come up and select one that inspires you in some way (positively or negatively) and free write about it. Give yourself exactly 15 minutes to write without stopping. Don’t think! Brave bonus: Publish to your blog without editing! (You can include a disclaimer.)
How did this particular prompt go for you? Was it fun? Challenging? Strange? Interesting?
